Lyra, also known as aerial hoop, is an aerial art form that alchemizes the strength and athleticism of traditional sport with the grace, flexibility, and intuitive expressionism of dance. Securely suspended from the ceiling on a steel circular hoop, students will work towards executing various level-appropriate poses, transitions, rolls, drops, and spins over a multiple class series. Those with demonstrated proficiency will go on to learn progressively more challenging skills, as well as have the opportunity to learn and create original choreography. All students (regardless of age or prior aerial experience) will start by learning fundamental strength-building and conditioning exercises, and by practicing balance and body awareness both in and out of the hoop. Students will be taught how to safely mount, dismount, and perform a variety of sequences of moves on the hoop over the course of the series. Spin techniques will be introduced to students once consistency and confidence have been established within static practice. Class curriculum is flow / dance-centric; while dynamics will be explored, please note that this course does not feature higher-risk, more acrobatic moves. Open to all levels of experience!
